Be Safe and Party!

As the festive season approaches, Bolton’s neighbourhood policing team and the Be Safe partnership want you to Be Safe and Party!

Each year, the police, council, fire service, health services town centre business crime partnership and others get together with local businesses, pubs and clubs in Bolton town centre and other areas of Bolton to promote having fun and staying safe over the festive season. Bolton University and Colleges also get involved in promoting the campaign.

This year the campaign will begin on 1st December, and run until 31st December.

Listen out for Bolton’s own Dave Spikey, who has recorded safety messages that will be heard at Moor Lane bus station, advising shoppers to keep safe so they can enjoy the festivities.

Be Safe and Party is all about: ·

  • promoting personal safety (walking away from fights, taking safe transport home such as licensed taxis, ordering your taxi home before you go out);
  • drinking more safely (avoiding binge drinking, pacing drinks, drinking water between alcoholic drinks);
  • looking out for your friends on nights out (sticking together, travelling home together);
  • being aware of car crime (keeping Christmas shopping bags out of the car when you’re not there, or locking them in the boot if you have to leave them in the car);
  • keeping Christmas shopping safe (on your person and in your car);
  • home security and valuables security (not leaving Christmas presents on display in the house, before and after Christmas);
  • having fun and staying safe.

Look out for events on 1st December in Bolton town centre, to launch this Christmas campaign.

Clubbing or pubbing at night

When we are enjoying a night out with friends, it can be all too easy to have one or two alcoholic drinks more than we planned.

In fact, the message to remember is Party!

Pace your drinks – if possible make every other drink a non-alcoholic one. Too much alcohol (as most of us know) can impair our senses and may make us so incapable that we either end up a victim of crime or seriously damage our health.

If you can, eat before or during a night out, as eating slows alcohol getting into your bloodstream. It also gives you more energy and lessens the effects the next day.

Drink smaller drinks: it sounds obvious, but it's better to drink smaller measures of drinks if you have the choice – especially with wine. A large glass of wine in most bars is equivalent to a third of a bottle (a lot of kebabs!)

Always stay together – it is easier to stay safe in a group and travel into and out of town together

Remember to walk away from trouble – it really isn’t worth a fight.

Take safe transport – plan ahead and know who you’re going to get home.

Your safety is your responsibility – we can all do our own bit to keep the town centre safe.
