Keep Your Belongings Safe

Theft from Person

Bolton’s Be Safe Partnership is running a Theft from Person campaign aimed at raising public awareness about keeping personal belongings like handbags, wallets and purses safe and out of sight from potential thieves. The campaign which will be launched at the end of May and run until the end of June. It also aims to discourage people from leaving their handbags on display on a supermarket trolley, in a car or under the table in a pub.

As part of the campaign, leaflets and cat bells will be distributed in ‘hotspot area’ in Bolton, such as Bolton town centre and Farnworth town centre. The cat bells are designed to be attached to a handbag. If a would-be thief tries to unzip the bag, the bells will chime, and the owner of the handbag will be alerted.

Some key tips for keeping your belongings safe are:

  • Always keep your handbag zipped up.
  • Keep purses and wallets out of sight – not visible in your handbag, or in a loose pocket.
  • Be aware of pick pockets when you are in crowded places such as Bolton Market.
  • Never leave your handbag/ valuables unattended – in a supermarket on a trolley, in a pub or café under the table, or in your car, even for a minute.
