Be Safe WINS Tilley Award 2008

On 9th September 2008 the Be Safe partnership was named WINNER of the Tilley Award 2008 at the Problem Oriented Partnerships Conference for our Reducing Criminal Damage project . The Be Safe entry focussed on the way the partnership has reduced criminal damage by 19% since 2003/4. The other finalists were Safer Merton ( London ) and West Yorkshire Police who came second and third respectively. Bolton was named winner from a total of 150 entries, so this is seen as a great achievement.

Team Tilley collect their award from Chief Constable Matt Baggott (Leicestershire Police) (far left) and Professor Nick Tilley (far right). From l-r: Jonathan Bradley (GMP); Matthew Emerson (Bolton MBC); Mark Flannery (GMP) Andy Bolan (Bolton MBC).
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Tilley Awards which were originally established by the Home Office to publicise the use of problem-oriented approaches to crime reduction and what can be achieved by tackling crime in a different and more strategic way.
The three finalists' projects were deemed the best by an expert panel from the Home Office, academics, the Association of Chief Police Officers and previous winners of the Tilley Award. The Tilley Awards therefore attract a high profile judging panel, with previous judges including the award namesake Professor Nick Tilley, Sir Ronnie Flannigan, and Professor John Eck. As 2008 project winner, we will be invited to sit on the 2009 judging panel.
Bolton Evening News Article - 23 Sept 2008
The Bolton Evening News reported on our success at the Tilley Awards, interviewing residents of Hall'ith Wood, which has experienced a 67% reduction in criminal damage and a 41% reduction in anti-social behaviour since 2006. The following are quotes taken from the article:
"The difference between the estate now and how it was five years ago when we first moved here is unbelievable. The Police Community Support Officer Mark Flannery and the Neighbourhood Policing Team are now at the heart of the estate so it's a lot more like a proper neighbourhood and a community" Resident, Lynn Walmsley
"The work that has been done in this area has made a fantastic difference. You now see people walking through the estate which never happened before, and after attending the community walks together I'd say there's a lot more respect and interaction between young and older residents on the estate" Resident, Irene Walsh
