What is Bolton Drug Service?
Bolton Drug Service at Bentley House provides services to people who either refer themselves for treatment or those who are referred by their doctor or another service such as the criminal justice service. They work with anyone over the age of 19.
Treatment available from Bolton Drug Service includes:
- Detoxification, which can either be done at home with support or as an in-patient;
- Prescribing of medication to help to stabilise a person’s drug use, either prior to detoxification or as a maintenance dose to help them cut down their drug use; and
- Referral to residential rehabilitation.
Bolton Drug Service works closely with many GPs in the area. This allows a number of people to receive drug treatment from their GP’s surgery as part of their treatment and care plan.
How do I contact Bolton Drug Service?
You can phone for advice, information and to make an appointment during office hours, on (01204) 544640. There is an answerphone service when the office is closed.You can call in to book an appointment or to see the duty worker during office hours. You can ask to be referred by other community agencies, including your GP.
Bolton Drug Service is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.50pm and Thursday 9.00am to 6.30pm. There is a women only session on Monday mornings from 9-00am to 1-00pm.
The BSMS offices have a ramp for wheelchair access.

What is the Moving On Service at ADS?
Bolton ADS is part of a charitable organisation that works with people, over 18 years old, who have a drug problem. They focus on treatment, education, training and employment needs to help people develop personally, gain new skills and achieve their goals in terms of treatment, life and work.
When is ADS open?
ADS is open Monday to Friday 9.15am to 5.00pm (In certain circumstances it may be possible for service users to arrange appointments outside of these times – if you have particular needs, you can discuss these with your ADS worker).
How do I contact ADS at Wood Street?
You can contact ADS by phone for advice and information or to make an appointment with an ADS worker on (01204) 393660 or 382230 – there is an answerphone service when the office is closed. You can call in and book an appointment during office hours at 20 Wood Street, Bolton. You can ask to be referred to ADS by a lot of agencies in the community, including your GP.
Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access to the Wood Street building, but appointments can be made to meet at the ADS Higher Bridge Street office, or a home visit may be arranged for anybody with access difficulties.
ADS at Wood Street are also the single point of contact for alcohol treatment in Bolton (please see Services for People with Alcohol-Related Problems in Bolton below).

What is the Higher Bridge Project?
The Higher Bridge Project is a partnership between ADS and Bolton Substance Misuse Service. It is for anyone over 19 years old living in Bolton, who wants to become drug free or wants to learn more about becoming drug free.
When is the Higher Bridge Project open?
The Project is open from 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to FridayIf these times are not convenient, if you are working for example, appointments can be made for outside these hours – please ring for more details.Some group sessions are also available out of office hours.

You can refer yourself to the Higher Bridge Project by calling (01204) 525202 or by visiting and making an appointment at 35 Higher Bridge Street. You can also be referred by your GP, ADS Wood Street, Bolton Substance Misuse Service, Probation and many other agencies you may be in contact with.

Phoenix Futures

What is Phoenix Futures?
Phoenix Futures is an open-access, drop-in service providing more informal treatment for people who are experiencing problems with drugs, as well as for concerned friends and relatives of drug users. Their team of friendly and experienced staff give free, non-judgemental advice on harm minimisation, healthy living and the effects of substances.
Phoenix Futures also act as an entry point to the treatment system for heroin and crack cocaine users who need more structured treatment or substitute prescribing. These people can drop in to Phoenix Futures to talk about their needs and be referred to the most appropriate place for their treatment needs.
Phoenix can provide:
- Information and advice for drug users
- Information and advice for families, friends or carers of drug users
- Drug workers available for informal drop-in consultations
- Referral on to other services if this is appropriate – this may be other drug services, healthcare services, financial advice and debt management services, or others depending on the person’s needs
When is Phoenix Futures open?
Phoenix Futures is open from Monday to Friday 9.00am – 7.00pm, and on Saturdays 12.00 – 3.00pm. The service will always have a worker available for informal drop-in sessions during these times; you do not need to have booked an appointment.

Needle and Syringe exchange scheme
Bolton Drug Service manages and operates the Needle and Syringe Exchange service. The service aims to reduce the spread of blood-borne viruses like HIV and hepatitis amongst injecting drug users and the wider community. The scheme also provides the facilities for the return of used equipment for safe disposal.
This is a drop-in service during office hours except for Monday mornings. A number of community pharmacists (chemists) are also part of the needle and syringe exchange scheme. More information is available from Bolton Drug Service – phone (01204) 544640.
Sharps Hotline
